Stream video on Apple Watch over cellular or mobile data
Updated 23 October 2026
A GPS + Cellular Apple Watch has its own connection, so it can stream with your iPhone at home and no Wi-Fi in sight. Here's what you need in the US and Australia, and how to keep your data use down.
What you need
- A GPS + Cellular Apple Watch on watchOS 10 or later. GPS-only models stream over Wi-Fi or through a nearby iPhone instead. Which watches work.
- A watch plan from your carrier. The watch shares your iPhone's number on a plan added to your mobile account.
- Bluetooth headphones paired with the watch, for sound. How to connect them.
In the United States
AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all offer Apple Watch cellular plans. You set it up in the Watch app on your iPhone; your carrier decides pricing and coverage. On the watch, the setting is called Cellular.
In Australia
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone support Apple Watch cellular. On a watch set to Australian English, the setting is labelled Mobile Data rather than Cellular; it's the same thing. TubeWrist is on the Australian App Store for A$2.99.
Travelling
With watchOS 9.1 or later, cellular Apple Watch Series 5 and later, SE, and Ultra models can roam internationally, if your carrier supports roaming for Apple Watch. Turn on Data Roaming in the watch's Cellular (or Mobile Data) settings. Apple Watch cellular models are regional, so check with your carrier before you go.
Keep data use down
- Listen instead of watching. Audio-only mode streams just the sound: Settings ▸ Playback ▸ Audio Only.
- Lower the quality. TubeWrist never goes above 480p. Settings ▸ Playback ▸ Quality ▸ Low · 360p uses less again.
- Use Wi-Fi when it's there. The watch prefers a known Wi-Fi network over cellular on its own.
- Turn off Autoplay in Settings ▸ Playback, so nothing streams after you stop paying attention.
