Save battery and data watching video on Apple Watch

Updated 23 October 2026

Streaming video uses the screen, the radio, and Bluetooth at once, so it's one of the hardest things you can ask of a watch battery. These settings make the biggest difference.

1. Listen instead of watching

Audio-only mode streams just the sound, with the screen off. It's the single biggest saving for both battery and data. Settings ▸ Playback ▸ Audio Only.

2. Choose a lower quality

TubeWrist never streams above 480p, because the watch screen can't show more. 720p would use roughly 3.5× the data for detail you'd never see. To save more, open Settings ▸ Playback ▸ Quality and choose Low · 360p. Auto follows your signal.

3. Use Wi-Fi when you can

Streaming over cellular generally costs more battery than over Wi-Fi, and counts against your data plan. If you're at home, at work, or at the gym, join the Wi-Fi network on the watch first.

4. Let the screen rest

In full screen, the controls fade on their own. A lower screen brightness (Settings ▸ Display & Brightness on the watch) helps too.

5. Stop when you stop listening

The sleep timer ends playback after 5 to 60 minutes, so a video doesn't run all night. Turn off Autoplay in Settings ▸ Playback if you don't want the next video to start on its own.
