Rain sounds on Apple Watch: fall asleep without your phone
Updated 2 November 2026
Rain, thunder, a fan, the ocean — the long ambient videos that make sleep easier are mostly sound anyway. Play them from the watch with the picture off, and let the sleep timer stop them once you're out.
Step by step
- Connect your AirPods. One earbud is enough if you share the bed. watchOS doesn't play video sound through the watch speaker — pair them with the watch, not just the phone.
- Search for something long. Dictate 'rain sounds' or 'thunderstorm' and pick a video that runs for hours — ten-hour uploads are common.
- Turn on Audio Only. Settings ▸ Playback ▸ Audio Only. No picture, less battery, and it keeps playing with your wrist down.
- Set the sleep timer. Tap Sleep under the player and choose 5 to 60 minutes. Playback stops on its own — the cap is 60 minutes, even on a ten-hour video.
- Dark the screen. Theater Mode in Control Center stops a raised wrist from lighting the room.
Tips for sleeping with it
- Replay the same rain. Recent Searches and History bring last night's video back in a tap or two.
- Plan for battery use. Audio-only listening uses less battery than video, but streaming still draws power — start the night charged.
- Not just rain. Talks, stories and podcasts work the same way — see the sleep timer guide.
- Set the volume on the AirPods. Volume from the headphones, not the watch, is one less glowing screen in the dark.
Everything is unlocked for the first three days. After that, TubeWrist Pro is required to keep using the app.
